WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:08.000
Okay, now it's a five-plus-one. Welcome everyone to this

00:08.000 --> 00:12.000
deaf room. Open source. You policy something. You know the

00:12.000 --> 00:19.000
table better than I do. My name is Sebastian

00:19.000 --> 00:23.000
Wrightle. I am the director of EU Government Affairs for

00:23.000 --> 00:26.000
Appell and together with my colleagues, I am

00:26.000 --> 00:29.000
organizing this deaf room. Very happy that you all came.

00:29.000 --> 00:33.000
We're going to start with the presentation open source as a

00:33.000 --> 00:37.000
cultural movement by Stefano. You can look up probably the

00:37.000 --> 00:40.000
rest of the schedule, but I just want to give you a couple of

00:40.000 --> 00:46.000
words of not wisdom probably, but of what motivated

00:46.000 --> 00:53.000
this block in this deaf room. So a lot of people ask

00:53.000 --> 00:58.000
the question of how do we increase or improve

00:58.000 --> 01:04.000
Europe's competitiveness in the world? And I just thought that

01:04.000 --> 01:08.000
at first maybe it would be important to mention for the more

01:08.000 --> 01:12.000
technical minded. So I used to work in policy in the European

01:12.000 --> 01:16.000
Parliament for 10 years until the last summer. I'm a

01:16.000 --> 01:20.000
computer scientist. I used to go to these conferences to look

01:20.000 --> 01:25.000
at technical talks. And I think it's important for the

01:25.000 --> 01:29.000
more technically minded to understand that when we talk about

01:29.000 --> 01:33.000
competitiveness, it's not only about creating jobs and all

01:33.000 --> 01:37.000
of that. That is behind it, but it is about connecting with

01:37.000 --> 01:42.000
the narratives that we talk about in politics and that we

01:42.000 --> 01:48.000
need to motivate interest for open source in policy

01:48.000 --> 01:54.000
making and in that field. So yeah, in order for us to be

01:54.000 --> 01:58.000
understood and for the idea to be understood why open

01:58.000 --> 02:02.000
source is so important. We need to connect to these narratives

02:02.000 --> 02:08.000
that the politicians speak and this session is about that.

02:08.000 --> 02:12.000
We do understand that technology is built on the basis of open

02:12.000 --> 02:15.000
source, but that's something that we have to keep telling

02:15.000 --> 02:19.000
that the politicians and policymakers over and over again,

02:19.000 --> 02:22.000
because that is something that you don't understand if you're not

02:22.000 --> 02:27.000
very technical. Remember the XKCD picture with the

02:27.000 --> 02:30.000
blocks that make up a project or that make up our

02:30.000 --> 02:34.000
infrastructure and with sometimes the individual

02:34.000 --> 02:39.000
matches that hold up entire parts or the entire structure.

02:39.000 --> 02:44.000
So getting that idea into the minds of politicians is

02:44.000 --> 02:48.000
what we hear about. Not a lot of people know that

02:48.000 --> 02:51.000
technology is built that way and that in particular open

02:51.000 --> 02:55.000
source is the reason that all of our infrastructure keeps

02:55.000 --> 02:59.000
running. So that's what we're trying to explain.

02:59.000 --> 03:04.000
And one narrative that currently is around and that you've

03:04.000 --> 03:08.000
probably heard of is that of the euro stack. It's also been

03:08.000 --> 03:12.000
talked about in some of the previous talks.

03:12.000 --> 03:16.000
So yeah, let's connect to the narratives in policy

03:16.000 --> 03:20.000
making and in politics through the narratives that they

03:20.000 --> 03:23.000
understand. Even though we want to achieve something for open

03:23.000 --> 03:26.000
source here, we want to achieve something for society and

03:26.000 --> 03:29.000
seeing as I work for a business association, we want to

03:29.000 --> 03:31.000
achieve something for European businesses as well.

03:31.000 --> 03:35.000
Because that's after all the opportunity that we have not

03:35.000 --> 03:39.000
only implement the cool technology that we want to

03:39.000 --> 03:43.000
implement but also to create wealth and then

03:43.000 --> 03:47.000
income for people not only from this community but to

03:47.000 --> 03:52.000
also try to include more people to that overall

03:52.000 --> 03:58.000
wealth. So yeah, I think those were my introductory words.

03:58.000 --> 04:03.000
I will be around here all day long, probably. Let me know

04:03.000 --> 04:06.000
if you have any questions. And with that, I will hand over to

04:06.000 --> 04:08.000
Stefano. Thank you.

04:09.000 --> 04:12.000
Thank you.
